71 Miles Along Canals and Tiny Back Roads

The route we had planned for today (Monday 8/18) was a 68 mile ride largely on bike routes along the Marne-Rhine Canal. We began the ride on a marvelous path beside the canal, but after about 10 miles the bike path became unpaved and we went hunting for an alternative route. We ended up doing a 71 mile ride for the day, spending much of our time on small back roads through the countryside.

Our destination town was Bar le Duc, noteworthy for having been the capital of an independent state, the Duchy of Bar, which was situated between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire about 1000 years ago.
